FILM

There are times in life when we’re thrust into strange situations by a series of unexpected turns and surprises. Often times when we talk about them we say it was “as if we were in a movie”. But is movie logic really so far detached from our own reality or is it rather inspired by the myriad of unexpected events in our day-to-day life?

Our main character (Ilia) tells us about his strange experience, hitchhiking from Sofia to Varna. After spending many hours waiting at the outskirts of town, faith rewards him with Betty, who at first glance gains the young man’s sympathy and seems to promise a pleasant trip to the Black sea coast. Their relationship develops in a completely different direction and during their travels they face not only major problems with communication but also absurd, unexpected situations and weird characters, reminding all of us that no one’s imagination can possibly top what the harsh reality of life can think up. The comical situations that Ilia faces send him to some of cinema’s most epic scenes and as we hitchhike alongside him we also witness the long and personal journey of our protagonist.

“FILM” is one of those unusual plays, that elegantly threads the line between comedy and asking the audience questions pertaining to our everyday life, as well as some of the most deep, existential questions of our time.
